Field Day

Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens

Gain a deeper understanding of the interconnected systems of local ecology with naturalist and mycologist Damon Tighe. You can participate in many ways as a MCBG Naturalist during Field Day. MCBG will be offering an array of guided walks, info tables featuring leading local ecological organizations, and tutorials on how to use iNaturalist and practice your skills as a citizen scientist.

Sign up for one or two walks, and become a member of our Citizen Science Team by contributing to the "MCBG Spring Field Day 2024" iNaturalist project.


North Coast Seabirds

May 25th, 10am to 12pm
Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens

Join MCBG Horticulturist Paul Ruiz-Lopez for this monthly nature walk which will include both observance and discussion of resident and local seabirds of MCBG and greater North Coast area. This guided tour will lead you through the horticultural and natural areas of the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens. Come explore the Gardens' natural history and learn to think like a naturalist!

What to bring: Binoculars, windbreaker, journal and pencil

The Caspar Cove Project
Monthly Community Dive Event

Saturday, May 25th, 7am to 7pm, at Caspar Cove

Join us for the monthly Sea Urchin Removal Event at Caspar Cove! Dive into action and help to restore the health of our coastal ecosystem by removing Purple Sea Urchins from the waters of Caspar Cove. These voracious grazers have decimated the kelp forests, but with your help, we can work towards restoring balance to the underwater ecosystem. As a part of KelpFest! month on this Saturday in May, dive and marine science experts will share their knowledge of removing urchin as a part of this experimental restoration project. Dive enthusiasts and ocean lovers of all experience levels are welcome to participate. 

Other dives are the last Saturday of each month through September, organized by the Casper Cove Project:

Seaweed Foraging with Ocean Harvest Sea Vegetable Company

Sunday, May 26th, 7 - 10am

Come join the fun and take a seaside journey with Ocean Harvest Sea Vegetable Company, to the incredible, species-rich tide pools that fringe the Pacific Coast of Mendocino County! You'll learn to identify and harvest the bountiful sea vegetables that grow along our rocky shores. We want everyone to enjoy the time and immerse themselves in the seaweeds, the ocean and low tide beauty and more importantly, to become stewards of the special places we harvest. It is always with great honor and privilege that we harvest wild seaweeds and that we can share this time and place with you!

Dive into Science field sessions with Reef Check

June 1 & 2, 9am - 2pm, at Van Damme State Beach
June 8 & 9, 9am - 2pm, at Caspar State Beach

Reef Check trains citizen science divers to conduct long-term monitoring surveys of Kelp Forests from Washinton to Baja California. Join us at Van Damme State Beach June 1-2nd and Caspar Beach 8-9th to watch our team at work!  We will also be working with our most recent Dive into Science Open Water graduates to provide proficiency dives so they continue their training and become Reef Check divers!  Come chat with us and our volunteers! Our divers are happy to discuss everything kelp and how you can get involved with Reef Check. No sign-ups are necessary—just come and see us in action! 

Explore the Fort Bragg Mural Walk

Sunday, June 16th 10am - 3pm, at 435 N Main St.

Grab a "sea urchin" donut hole or two and head out on a self-guided mural tour in downtown Fort Bragg with our fun new Mural Map! The Alleyway Art Project works with local sponsors and building owners to bring an abundance of beautiful public artwork to downtown Fort Bragg. The new comprehensive map includes all the murals in town that the AAP, the city, and locals have installed, so you won't miss a one. Follow the color coded stars on the map for the complete tour, or bounce around and discover them on your own. Check out the QR codes next to murals to learn more about the artist, inspiration, sponsor, and backstory.
